During World War II, Allied and Axis forces waged spectacular battles in the air, on land, and in the sea. Eight decades later, iconic black-and-white footage of these scenes is still inspiring and horrifying. But there was also an unseen part of the war: covert actions that involved sabotage operations and psychological warfare. As eyewitness accounts and circumstantial evidence seem to suggest, the hospitable people in one particular port city became the targets of a cruel campaign being waged in their minds and attics. Could records of another hidden part of the war—signals intelligence—provide the proof?
