About 30 years after the end of WW2, Frederick Winterbotham’s book ‘The Ultra Secret’ caused a sensation, with its revelations about the achievements of the Bletchley Park codebreakers. Dr Mark Baldwin sets the book in its proper context, and examines some of the effects it produced. He also explains why serious historians should be aware of the pitfalls and problems in identifying ‘First Editions’, and why this is worth undertaking.
